Jakarta, Rental of a uterus is a practice in which women
rent their uterus to be worn with other children's children. This can be
accomplished by means of an expert from a fertility clinic planting an embryo
of a potential partner to a woman's womb hired.
Why do people do this? For couples the reasons may vary but
are mostly related to the woman being unable or unwilling to conceive her own
child under a condition. Meanwhile, in women whose uterus was hired, economic
reasons became one of the main drivers.
In Laos, for example, a woman known as Lao (28) admitted to
being paid about Rp 100 million to conceive twins. The amount is 72 times
greater than the minimum salary limit in Laos.
Laos is known to be a favorite place for the business of
renting the womb because in some countries this procedure has been banned. In
addition to the relatively low cost the Laotian government also still has no
specific rules for this practice.
"A lot of people are now shifting their attention to
Laos," said Sam Everingham from the foundation Families Through Surrogacy,
quoted by Reuters on Friday (9/6/2017).
There is no definite data that can show how big the business
actually rent the womb in Laos. But Laos itself does not have adequate
pregnancy services so that most couples only come for the implant procedure and
after that the womb of a rented woman was brought to another country like
Thailand.
"If a Laotian woman is hired by her womb and then comes
to Thailand at her birth, we do not consider it a violation of the law,"
said Thai Health Department Director Thongchai Keeratihuttayakorn.
