Men in Brazil Infected with Rabies After Bitten by 'Vampires'

Vampires in popular culture is known as a blood-sucking fictional monster. But in the real world this vampire is better known as the name for some species of bats that are dietary everyday is blood. Well related to this later there are men in Brazil who died after being bitten by one species of vampire bat named Diphylla ecaudata. These bats are known to love human blood, in contrast to other types of vampire bats that prefer animal blood.
As quoted from the Telegraph on Friday (9/6/2017), the man is known to have died from being infected by the rabies virus brought by the bat. The local health authorities are concerned that this rabies will become an epidemic as more reports of others are also bitten by vampire bats. "In one historical alleyway alone, 10 people are reported to have been bitten," said Edson Ribeiro of the Bahia Health Department.
Infectious disease expert Dr. Amesh Adalja of the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security describes rabies as dangerous because it can damage the central nervous system. When a person is bitten a vampire infected with a virus will walk down the nervous system until it finally gets into the brain.
Once in the brain rabies will trigger inflammation that makes inter-cell communication disturbed. The impact of a patient can experience things like personality changes, irritability, delirium, to develop fear of water and sensitivity to light. As inflammation gets worse, the patient's swollen brain may experience convulsions, coma, and then die.
According to Dr. Amesh who makes Rabies terrible is because once the symptoms appear there is no cure. One way to avoid becoming a victim is to get a rabid vaccine as soon as possible after being bitten by an animal.
