Causes of Higher Blood Pressure During Pregnancy and Menopause
Women can also develop hypertension, especially in pregnant
and menopausal women, their blood pressure tends to increase. Hmm, what is the
reason?
According to Dr. Arieska Ann Soenarta, SpJP, FIHA from
Harapan Kita Hospital, an increase in blood pressure can also occur during
pregnancy. Well, estrogen plays an important role in the rise of blood pressure
in the menopausal phase where when estrogen levels decline, the risk of
hypertension increases.
"When a woman stops her periods, her hormone estrogen
decreases significantly, which can damage the endothelial cells that trigger
plaque in blood vessels, and blood vessels can trigger high blood pressure that
causes cardiovascular disease (CVD) and even stroke , "Said Dr. Ann in a
written statement sent by Philips Indonesia.
He added, this condition is not a problem for men. The
reason, the decline in testosterone does not significantly affect the risk of
hypertension, unless accompanied by unhealthy lifestyles, smoking and obesity.
In addition to CVD and and stroke, hypertension is also a major risk factor for
Cardio Cerebro Vascular Disease (CCVD).
Dr Ann said, most deaths in the world are caused by CCVD,
both in men and women. It is estimated that there will be an increase in the
prevalence of CCVD between 2000-2025 with the number reaching 9 percent in men
and 13 percent in women.
"For those who already suffer from hypertension,
treatment becomes important to control the disease, while for prevention, in
essence, back to a healthy lifestyle, such as healthy eating habits, regular
exercise, keep the weight healthy and not smoking, supported by examination
Routine to monitor blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels, "added
Dr. Ann.
"We are constantly trying to educate women about the
risks of cardiovascular disease, and advocate for heart health early on, and we
are constantly trying to raise awareness among women in Indonesia that
cardiovascular disease is the number one killer.Complications due to
hypertension take a long time to develop, thus raising risk awareness As early
as possible, we hope more women and their families will make early lifestyle
improvements, which will greatly reduce their risk of heart disease in the
future, "said Philips Indonesia President Director Suryo Suwignjo.
Suryo said, maintaining health can be started from a simple
way. In addition to adopting a healthy lifestyle, do regular checkups and do
not wait until you feel something is wrong with the body.
